East Village

East Village The East Village, once home to the wealthy Astor's and Vanderbilt's, became a melting pot for early immigrants coming to New York City. The nearly one square mile neighborhood retained most of that ethnicity and is where you can find some of the most diverse culinary treats anywhere in the city. Whether you dream of the crush of Indian eateries or lust for some corned beef and cabbage, the east village can satisfy anything your hunger desires. After a lovely bite you can stroll over to Public Theater (the home of many now-famous plays), check out the tattoo parlors in Alphabet City or hang out with the skaters at the Alamo (a 15ft. rotating cube). A favorite place to hang is Tompkins Square Park, where you can find college students taking in some sun as well as college professors giving political lectures to those walking buy. The park also offers a farmer's market where you can pick up the finest fresh produce.
